I know what it feels like to be fed up with life. To be stuck in one place, with no hope for the future.

But if you’re lucky enough, through your own doing or a change in circumstances, you may one day wake up to find yourself slowly falling back in love with life again.

And when this happens, it can be a bit confusing. Especially if you’ve been down in the dumps for a long time. Those feelings of negativity may take a while to melt away.

But in time, they get replaced with so many positive emotions, and above all, a deep appreciation for life.

Want to know if that’s what you’re experiencing? Check out the following signs:

1) You appreciate simple pleasures

Life is about the small things, but that’s hard to see when you’re feeling bitter or hard done by.

So one major sign that indicates you’re slowly falling in love with life again is when you can appreciate the seemingly insignificant.

The way the sunlight illuminates your room in the morning. The sounds of the birds outside. My personal favorite is that first sip of coffee on a cold morning.

You don’t need grand gestures or flashy items to make you happy – you’re appreciating life in its most basic, natural forms and this brings you a lot of contentment.

2) You have increased energy and enthusiasm

Some of you reading this might have “checked out” for months or even years. Others will have lost their spark temporarily.

Like me – a month ago I went through a dark time. My cat passed away, and on top of that, I got Covid. A few personal relationships broke down around the same time.

I hated life in those moments. I just wanted to stay in bed and ignore the world.

But as I slowly started coming out of that funk, I began noticing the beauty in the world again. I started spending more time outside and in nature.

And as a result, I noticed my energy levels returned. I became more enthusiastic about making plans with friends and family.

So if you’ve noticed an extra spring in your step, and more motivation to do things in life, it’s a pretty good sign you’re falling back in love and leaving behind whatever was holding you down

3) You desire to connect

When you’re unhappy in life, it’s normal to want to shut yourself off.

Perhaps you don’t want to bring down the mood of your loved ones. Or you simply don’t want to answer questions or put on a happy front.

But now that’s changed.

Suddenly, you crave company. You enjoy seeing friends or getting out and meeting new people.

Spending time with your family becomes a priority and you feel incredibly grateful to be able to create memories with them.

Ultimately, “life” is all about connectivity. So it makes sense that when you fall in love with life, you’d want to “connect” more with others.

4) You laugh easily

During my crappy few weeks, I didn’t laugh. I couldn’t. Nothing made me smile.

So I knew the tide was turning when one day my husband told me something pretty silly but I burst out laughing.

His face said it all:

She’s back.

And the same will be true for you. If you notice you’re much quicker to laugh, it shows you’ve found your love for life again.

Don’t get me wrong – your problems probably haven’t all disappeared. The world is still full of war and chaos.

But you’ve somehow managed to accept that and embrace life just as it is.

Your laughter is proof of that. Not only are you rediscovering the world around you, but perhaps parts of yourself too. Parts that may have been buried for a long time but are now re-emerging.

5) You’re inspired and creative

There are so many different elements to “life”. Politics, work, relationships, bills, kids…I could go on but I think you get where I’m going.

To me, the BEST parts of life are the creative ones. The beauty in the world comes from art, stories, poetry, music, and all of that good stuff that makes us FEEL things.

Things that connect us to one another, rather than divide us.

And if you’ve noticed your creative juices flowing again, it’s another sign you’re falling in love with life.

You feel the rhythm of mother nature flowing through you whenever you get into the zone while working on a creative project.

Your ideas have no limits. You immerse yourself in it and that makes you feel connected to something bigger than yourself.

If you’re currently experiencing this, enjoy it!

6) You’re resilient in the face of challenges

Once upon a time, losing your job would have meant the end of the world. Literally.

But now you’re facing your challenges and they don’t overwhelm you as much. You’re able to put them into perspective and draw upon the skills you’ve picked up over the years to solve these issues.

In other words, when life hits you in the face with a lemon, you don’t curse the lemon or let it ruin your day.

You take the lemon and do whatever the heck you want with it because you’re in control!

This tells me you’ve built enough resilience to fall back in love with life, despite all the killjoy lemons out there.

7) You’re positive about the future

During your dark days, you probably struggled to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I felt that way during the rough month I mentioned earlier. As someone who is usually very optimistic and positive, it was weird to feel so…defeated.

But when life is on the upswing, it’s crazy how our perspective can change.

When we start falling back in love with life, we find a deep, inner hope that was probably there all along. Just buried under layers of sadness, resentment, and anger.

But now it’s time to be positive. To think about the future with delight rather than dread.

Sound familiar?

If so, it sounds like you’ve made it to the other side and can now start planning a vibrant future with enthusiasm and love.

8) You take better care of yourself

Another sign you’re slowly falling in love with life again is when you start to take better care of yourself.

You begin taking pride in your appearance. You keep your hair nice and treat yourself to a spa or long soak in the bath.

You also find yourself taking more interest in your mental health – you’re being kinder to yourself and taking breaks when you need to recharge your batteries.

All of this shows that you’re not only falling back in love with life but with yourself too.

So it’s natural that self-care doesn’t seem like a burden anymore. It’s something you deserve and you’re starting to realize that.

9) You show patience and compassion

When someone is unkind or impatient with me, I try to remind myself that perhaps life hasn’t been very nice to them. And they’re projecting how they feel onto others.

You may or may not have been this way.

But the fact that you’re now showing more patience and compassion than ever before shows something has changed within you.

You’re more understanding about the highs and lows of life.

So when someone comes to you, no matter how annoying they are, you manage to find the compassion needed to make them feel better.

Not to mention, you’re not in such a rush anymore – when someone cuts you off on the road, rather than flip the middle finger you decide to laugh it off and move on.

Essentially, you’ve made peace with the fact that life isn’t always perfect, but you love it regardless.

10) You’re present in the moment

And finally, if you’re really falling back in love with life again, you’ll notice you’re way more tuned in to the present moment.

You’re not stuck dwelling on the past or fretting over the future.

You may notice this in the little things you do – stroking your cat or looking out of the window on a sunny day. You notice the sounds and colors, and you take it all in.

The point is, you’re learning to love life in the here and now. To appreciate every moment of it, no matter how “boring” or uneventful it is.

And that’s a beautiful starting place to be in.
